Estonia’s national epic gets a new English translation for 150th anniversary

Estonian Literature Museum will publish Estonia's national epic “Kalevipoeg” (“Kalev’s Son”) in a new English translation version for its 150th anniversary, LETA/National Broadcasting reports.

The book, entitled "Kalevipoeg: the Estonian National Epic / eesti rahvuseepos", is the second translation of the full text of the epic, written down by F. R. Kreutzwald, into English. The translation is in the book alongside with its Estonian original.

 

“The birth story of the book is extraordinary in the Estonian cultural landscape,” said the book’s editor-in-chief Marin Laak. The author of the translation is Australian-Estonian poet Triinu Kartus from Tasmania; the editor is Dr Harri Mürk from Toronto; comments have been written by Dr David E. Gay from Bloomington, USA.

 

The book is supplied with three thorough epilogues, by President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, by Tartu University world literature professor Jüri Talvet and comparative folkloristics professor Ülo Valk.

 

F. R. Kreutzwald’s “Kalevipoeg” was first published in 1861.
