After Vilnius University established scholarships for Belarusian students, some 500 young people have expressed their interest in studying in Lithuania, the university said, cites LETA/BNS.

Around 90 students were accepted urgently in response to the ongoing political unrest and tightening regime sanctions in Belarus, bringing the total number of Belarusian students studying in Vilnius University to around 150.

"The idea of the "Grand Ducky of Lithuania's scholarships", established by VU, is a possibility to help those who need our assistance now. It was a swift response to the existing situation in the neighboring country not only to provide an opportunity to study but also to continue studies for regime-affected students expelled from universities," Rimvydas Petrauskas, rector of Vilnius University, said in a statement.

Grand Ducky of Lithuania's scholarships provide opportunities for Belarusian students to study in VU free of charge for the whole period of studies, and the brightest students will receive additional financial incentives in the form of monthly payouts of 200 euros.

It is stressed in the statement that Belarusian willing to study in VU should met academic requirements.
