Veshnyakov: relations between Latvia and Russia improved after Zatlers' visit, but there is no continuation

In an interview in today's edition of the Russian language Telegraf newspaper, Russian Ambassador to Latvia Alexander Veshnyakov said that relations between Latvia and Russia improved after the 2010 visit to Moscow by then-President Valdis Zatlers, but added that there has not been a logical continuation of these relations, reports LETA.

The ambassador said that 2010 was an important and even a successful year in relations - many agreements were signed that have already come into force, an agreement on the establishment of a committee of historians was made, as well as economic cooperation priorities were defined.

However, the level of political interaction lessened the coming years with unfriendly statements from some politicians, saying that Russia's foreign policy poses a threat to Latvia's security, Veshnyakov explained.

''High ranking politicians have openly said that they believe Russia is an enemy that cannot be trusted,'' the ambassador said.

''I hope that common sense will prevail and relations develop in a positive direction which is mutually beneficial for both countries,'' Veshnyakov said.
