Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev has favorably evaluated the prospects for cooperation between Lithuania and Russia in the transport sector and has noted that a smooth transit to Kaliningrad region is very important to Russia. At a meeting with transport ministers in Moscow on Friday, Medvedev also expressed interest in the development of efficient transport corridors between the continents of Europe and Asia.

The meeting with the transport ministers, including Lithuania's Transport Minister Eligijus Masiulis, was held during the International Transport Forum in the capital of Russia, reports ELTA/LETA.

The transport minister of Lithuania thanked Russia's leader Medvedev for cooperation in solving the problems related to the control of Lithuanian carriers on entry to Russia.

Masiulis also noted increasingly closer bilateral cooperation with the Transport Ministry of Russia and with Transport Minister Igor Levitin personally, and emphasized Lithuania's efforts to ensure a smooth transit of people and cargoes to the Kaliningrad region.

Masiulis remembered the first meeting of the transport ministers of Asia and Europe (Asia-Europe Meeting – ASEM) held in Vilnius on October 19-20 and stated that Russia was an important partner for ensuring efficient transport corridors between the two continents. The minister invited Russia to take part in the development of the Europe-Asia corridor and noted that the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications would make effort to ensure that Russia would participate in cooperation between Asia and Europe as it was necessary because of the specifics of the transport and logistics sector.
