BC, Riga, 01.07.2014.Print version
The new European Parliament (EP) assembly, consisting of 751 deputies from 186 national parties, gathered for its first meeting on Tuesday, informs LETA.

Regardless of the fact that European People's Party (EPP) lost 60 seats after the elections in May, it is still the largest political fraction of the new parliament. There are still the same seven fractions as previously, as France's far right National Front led by Marine Le Pen, did not manage to form a fraction this time.

The agenda for the first meeting includes EP presidential elections. It is expected that the current EP president Martin Schulz will be re-elected for a second term.

EPP won 221 deputy seats in the new parliament, while the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats won 191 seats, the European Conservatives and Reformists – 70, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe – 67, European United Left/Nordic Green Left – 52, the Greens/European Free Alliance – 50, Europe of Freedom and Democracy – 48.

Latvia will be represented by four deputies from Unity – Valdis Dombrovskis, Artis Pabriks, Sandra Kalniete and Krisjanis Karins, one deputy from Harmony – Andrejs Mamikins, one from Greens and Farmers' Union – Iveta Grigule, one from All For Latvia! – For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK – Roberts Zile, and one from Union of Russians – Tatjana Zdanoka.
