On Monday in Brussels, Raimundas Karoblis, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania in the EU, and Yongfu Sun, the Director General of the European Affairs Department of Chinese Ministry, signed the Agreement pursuant to Article XXIV: 6 of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994 relating to the modification of concessions in the schedules of the Republic of Bulgaria and Romania in the course of their accession to the European Union, reported LETA/ELTA, referring to the official Lithuanian Presidency website eu2013.lt.

"This agreement is an example of successful EU-China cooperation. Another important step in EU-China bilateral relations will include negotiations on the EU-China investment agreement, which would open up the Chinese market for EU investments, and ensure their protection and equal competition," said Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis.

The signed EU-China agreement is the first bilateral agreement signed by Lithuania, holding the Presidency of the EU Council, on behalf of the EU.

The agreement provides for compensation for China in relation to WTO commitments concerning Bulgarian and Romanian trade changes after their EU accession. Compensating for the loss of China, the EU will increase the tariff quota for garlic, mushrooms, chocolate, confectionery, and biscuits. In signing this agreement, the EU completed negotiations with interested WTO parties on compensation in relation to Bulgaria and Romania's EU accession. Similar agreements were signed with Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Cuba, New Zealand and the United States.
