Changes in makeup of EP confirmed; Latvia to have 1 less MEP after 2014 elections

On Wednesday, the European Parliament (EP) officially confirmed the reduction in the number of European Parliament members (MEP) after the next EP elections, which means that Latvia will lose one MEP, writes LETA.

According to the decision, 12 countries will lose one MEP – Romania, Greece, Belgium, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria, Bulgaria, Ireland, Croatia, Lithuania and Latvia. Furthermore, Germany will lose three MEPs out of the 99 they currently have.

 

According to the Lisbon Treaty, the next European Parliament will be made up of 751 members, down from the current 754 members.

 

The next European Parliament will also include MEPs from new EU member Croatia.
