Lithuania's FinMin: euro is not a rejection of state sovereignty

Minister of Finance Rimantas Sadzius does not think that Lithuania will manage to adopt euro next year because so far it has not been calculated fully whether allowed criteria of the fiscal deficit was not exceeded in 2012, informs LETA/ELTA.

"It is in our interest to adopt the euro as soon as possible. () There is a lot of work to be done and I would say the main task is to convince our people because it is the people who will use the money. To convince that the euro is strong, convertible currency recognized around the world and that it is really good thing and not the rejection of state sovereignty, as some claim, "said the minister in an interview on the radio Ziniu Radijas.
In order to adopt the euro Lithuania must meet the Maastricht criteria. This means that the fiscal deficit should not exceed 3% of gross domestic product (GDP), public debt should not exceed 60% of annual GDP.
