Several Latvian public organizations in Ireland have sent a letter to Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (Reform Party), urging to extend Latvian Ambassador to Ireland Peteris Karlis Elferts' term of office, the portal Baltic Ireland reports.

Peteris Karlis Elferts.

The organizations emphasize that Elferts has helped to expand and improve Latvian public activities in Ireland. "His experience, growing up outside Latvia, has given Latvians in Ireland a different view on Latvian values and their preservation, taking care of the Latvian language in families and loving one's native country, combining being Latvian with integrating in another country while retaining one's belonging to his/her native country," states the letter.

The Foreign Ministry's Press and Information Department informed LETA that the Foreign Ministry is delighted with such high evaluation of Elferts' work. "It indicates that the ambassador is successfully working with the Latvian diaspora, which is among the foreign service's priorities, especially in Ireland," points out the Foreign Ministry.

Elferts assumed his duties on August 19, 2009. His term in office will expire in 2013. "Term of office extensions for ambassadors are possible, however, they depend on many factors, including the president's stance, the foreign service's plans and the ambassador's interests," explains the Foreign Ministry.
