During the discussion with Komorowski, the two heads of State focussed on bilateral relations between Estonia and Poland and on their co-operation in the European Union.

President Ilves emphasised that Estonia places much importance on its close relations with Poland. “It is important for us for Poland as one of the big Member States in the community to play a strong role in the EU,” he said, adding, “Estonia stands firmly on your side in this aspect.”

Ilves and Komorowski noted that the principal goals of the European Union are the common foreign and security policy and the energy policy. Ilves stated that Estonia is prepared to share its experiences in using oil shale.

The two heads of state also talked about Estonia’s preparations for the accession to the euro. “Aspiring towards the euro forced Estonia to make great efforts for cutting Government spending; it was difficult, but unavoidable and has had a positive impact on a long-term perspective,” said the Estonian President.

Ilves and Komorowski also talked about their countries’ and EU’s relations with Russia.

The main subject matter discussed during the meeting with the Poland’s minister of foreign affairs Radoslaw Sikorski was the need for responsible fiscal policy in the European Union.

At the end of the visit, Ilves thanked Poland for its contribution in monitoring and defending the Baltic States’ air space.
