Latvian European Parliament Deputy Sandra Kalniete (Civic Union), participating in the high-level ''Friends of Europe'' think-tank meeting in Brussels, urged for the Baltic States to be admitted to the euro-zone.

Sandra Kalniete.

Kalniete introduced European opinion leaders with the dramtic situation in Latvia and society's attempts to get over the deep economic crisis in the country, as LETA was informed by the European People's Party (EPP) group's press secretary in Latvia Girts Salmgriezis.

Kalniete emphasized that rich Western countries are firstly to blame for the global economic crisis. With these mistakes, Latvia has become a victim of the crisis. That is why European solidarity is especially important at the moment, which would allow Latvia to get out of its complicated situation more rapidly.

One of the best solutions to stabilize the economy and save many people from poverty is the faster implementation of the euro currency in the Baltic States, the politician said.

The European Parliament member pointed out the Mastricht Treaty's criteria for the Baltic States must be flexible, even more so due to the fact that many euro-zone countries do not comply with the treaty's conditions themselves.

Kalniete has since 2004 been a board member of ''Friends of Europe''.
