First agreement on Lithuanian-French strategic partnership signed in Paris

On Friday, September 4, the first agreement on strategic partnership between Lithuania and France was signed in Paris. The political declaration on strategic partnership was signed by Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskate, who arrived to France on a one-day working visit, and leader of France Nikolas Sarkozy, reported BC presidential press service.

The political declaration establishes that the Governments of the two countries would later draw up a specific action plan. "Lithuania must use all its possibilities for deepening relations with the strongest member states of the European Union, and France is among them. I hope that this declaration will not remain only in a paper, but it will bring specific results," Grybauskaite was cited in a press release of the presidential pres service.

 

The two countries will develop a political dialogue between the European Union (EU) and its Southern and Eastern neighbors, paying an exceptional attention to the Eastern Partnership Initiative and further development of the programme for the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership.

 

France states that Lithuania's energy sector should be integrated to the EU energy market as soon as possible.

 

Lithuania and France will also strengthen their cooperation concerning civil nuclear energy issues as both countries have plans to carry out new nuclear energy projects.

 

Both countries also agreed to consolidate European Security and Defence Policy, consult over NATO reform with a goal to strengthen both the EU ad NATO.

 

Lithuania and France also aim to expand their armed forces in Europe, fortify the technological and industrial basis of Europe's defence.

 

On Friday, President Grybauskaite, attended a summer session meeting of MEDEF (French Business Confederation) and delivered a report titled "Freedom, the only value that has withstood the test of time".
