Vilnitis replaces Liepaja’s long-term mayor Sesks

Print versionepaja city council at an extraordinary meeting today elected Janis Vilnitis (Latvian Association of Regions, LRA) as the city mayor, replacing Uldis Sesks (Liepaja Party) who has been in the position for 21 years, reported LETA/BNS.

Vilnitis was the only candidate for the position and he was elected with 11 votes to three.
A new mayor had to be elected because Sesks in accordance with the earlier agreement with LRA lawmakers, had announced that he is stepping down from his position.
Under the agreement, after the last municipal elections in 2017, LRA promised to support the Liepaja Mayor Uldis Sesks for the time being, while in the fall f 2018, a new mayor will be elected for Liepaja, who will be a member of LRA.
