If the Latvian State Television's (LTV) budget is reduced, subscription fees will have to be introduced in order to ensure further operation of LTV, as the television's director general Edgars Kots said this morning in an interview to the television program "Labrit Latvija!" (Good Morning, Latvia!).

Kots said that such a decision will be made by politicians, but he believes that it is the only way to retain public television if its financing is cut, writes LETA.
Kots also added that the moment when LTV could have united with the Latvian State Radio (LR) has passed. LTV does not have any debt, as it has been able to balance its budget and ensure the necessary financing for its programs. If a merger is to take place now, LR's debt will fall on LTV.
In an interview to the newspaper Diena today, Kots also pointed out that he does not see a possibility that LTV and LR could merge, because LR already has a debt of LVL 800,000, and LTV will not be able to cover LR's debt.
