Latvian MFA appreciates the successful cooperation with Flanders over 20 years

On May 9th, the Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics met with Geert Bourgeois, Minister–President of the Government of Flanders, who has arrived in Riga to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the agreement on cooperation between Latvia and Flanders. Edgars Rinkevics said he was happy about the successful cooperation with the Flemish Region in Belgium over the past two decades, informed BC the Latvian MFA.

Under an agreement signed in 1996, opportunities have been provided for cooperation partners in Latvia to carry out a number of projects and develop useful contacts in various areas.

 

As part of his visit, Geert Bourgeois met with Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis and the Minister of Transport, Uldis Augulis, as well as visiting the Port of Riga. Minister-President Bourgeois was accompanied by senior executives from the ports of Antwerp, Ghent and Zeebrugge.

 

Riga also hosted a visit from an academic delegation representing the Catholic University of Leuven, the University of Antwerp and Thomas More University College. The University of Latvia signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Catholic University of Leuven. Toward the end of his visit, Geert Bourgeois delivered a lecture at the Riga Graduate School of Law on challenges and opportunities in Europe.

 

Belgium is a federal state consisting of three regions and three linguistic communities. The Brussels-Capital Region, the Flemish Region and the Walloon Region exercise their authority in a number of fields, including economic development, foreign trade, agriculture, and environmental protection.

 

Minister-President Geert Bourgeois will be visiting Vilnius and Tallinn immediately following his trip to Riga.
