24.5% Europeans at risk of poverty or social exclusion

The number of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion has slightly decreased in the European Union (EU) in 2013, reaching 122.6 million people, according to latest data compiled by Eurostat, cites LETA.

In 2013, a total of 122.6 million (24.5%) of EU residents were at risk of poverty or social exclusion.
In 2012, the number of such people was 124.5 million (24.8%), in 2008 – 23.8%.
The worst situation was registered in Bulgaria, where 48% of residents are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, followed by Romania – 40.4%, Greece – 35.7%, and Latvia – 35.1%.
In Lithuania, the number of such people is 30.8%, in Estonia – 23.5%.
The Czech Republic registered the best results, where the number of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion is only 14.6%, followed by the Netherlands – 15.9%.
