Eurostat data shows a different picture for index dynamics in the Baltic States. From 2008 to 2012, the Gini Index has dropped from 37.5 to 35.2%, however, Latvia still has the highest Gini in the European Union. The Lithuanian Gini Index in 2008 was 34%, in 2010 it reached 37%, which was the highest indicator among the EU countries; during the next two years it dropped to 32%. From 2008 to 2012, the Estonian Gini Index jumped from 30.9 to 32.5%. From 2005 to 2012, the average Gini in the European Union remained around 31%.
The Gini coefficient or the Gini index is a widely used measure for income inequality. The coefficient ranges from 0 to 1. The higher the country's index, the more uneven its income distribution.
