Latvia has highest income inequality index among Baltic States

BC, Riga, 14.05.2014.Print version
Regardless of the efforts meant to reduce income inequality, metrics indicate that the income distribution in Latvia is still less equal than in the rest of the Baltic States, informs LETA/ELTA.

In 2012, the Gini Index in Latvia was the highest among the European Union member states – 35.2%, representing unequal income distribution among different groups of residents. The Gini Index in Estonia and Lithuania was lower than in Latvia, however, in 2012, it was above the average index – 30.6%, the latest survey carried out by SEB banka indicates.

Eurostat data shows a different picture for index dynamics in the Baltic States. From 2008 to 2012, the Gini Index has dropped from 37.5 to 35.2%, however, Latvia still has the highest Gini in the European Union. The Lithuanian Gini Index in 2008 was 34%, in 2010 it reached 37%, which was the highest indicator among the EU countries; during the next two years it dropped to 32%. From 2008 to 2012, the Estonian Gini Index jumped from 30.9 to 32.5%. From 2005 to 2012, the average Gini in the European Union remained around 31%.

The Gini coefficient or the Gini index is a widely used measure for income inequality. The coefficient ranges from 0 to 1. The higher the country's index, the more uneven its income distribution.
