Latvian president and Estonian PM discuss bilateral development and strategy for future

On Friday, Latvian President Andris Berzins met with the new Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas in Riga, during which the two sides discussed the development of bilateral relations and strategy for the future, LETA was informed by the Presidential Press Service.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the matter of energy independence in the Baltics. They also emphasized the necessity for closer Baltic integration in projects of mutual importance, as well as European Union projects in the region.

 

Berzins also congratulated to the new Estonian prime minister on taking office, and emphasized that bilateral relations between Latvia and Estonia have always been very good and close, which is especially important in the current unpredictable situation in regard to the events in Ukraine. At the same time, he pointed out that Latvia is very concerned with what is happening in Ukraine, and believes that Russia is directly behind the destabilization of the situation on the ground.

 

Roivas also pointed out that Latvia and Estonia are close and friendly neighbors, and that relations on all levels are very good. He added that the strategic interests of both countries are identical.

 

Discussing the matter of energy independence in the Baltics, both sides were in agreement that the gas connection project between Poland and Lithuania is of utmost importance to help end the isolation of the Baltic gas market.

 

Roivas emphasized that Estonia is hoping to push forward with a gas interconnection project with Finland.

 

Speaking about bilateral cooperation, Berzins especially emphasized education, praising the cooperation of the Latvian and Estonian sister towns of Valka and Valga.
