With women present in all fields of the public and private sectors, Latvia shares second place with Indonesia and only falls short of Russia with its 43% of female senior managers. The percentage has remained stable in Latvia for the last five years.

Also, a recent UNESCO Institute for Statistics research called “Women in Science” shows that Latvia has a proportion of female scientists of 51% in the total scientific field. The research shows that women in Latvia’s scientific field tend work in the public sector (58%) and academic institutions (52%) more than in the private sector (40%).

Latvia’s top political positions are also often occupied by women: the current Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma, current Speaker of the Saeima (Parliament) Solvita Āboltiņa, ex-President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga and many female ministers in the government.

Latvia has made great progress in bridging the gender gap with opportunities for women in business and public offices being equal to those of men and showing a boost in statistics compared to other EU countries.
