Lithuania and Latvia – among least innovative economies in EU

BC, Vilnius, 05.11.2013.Print version
According to a new innovation indicator launched by the European Commission, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Poland and Latvia are among the least innovative economies among other European Union (EU) member states, informs LETA/ELTA.

The proposed indicator is based on technological innovation as measured by patents, employment in knowledge-intensive activities as a percentage of total employment, competitiveness of knowledge-intensive goods and services, and employment in fast-growing firms operating in innovative sectors.

According to the indicator, Sweden is the EU member state which gets the most out of its innovation investments.

The proposed new indicator shows a wide range of innovation output across EU Member States (EU average set to 100 in 2010):

The top performers in the EU owe their ranking to doing well on several or all of the following factors: an economy with a high share of knowledge-intensive sectors, fast-growing innovative firms, high levels of patenting and competitive exports.

The indicator, which was developed at the request of EU leaders to benchmark national innovation policies, also showed that significant differences remain between EU countries with Bulgaria, Lithuania and Latvia getting the lowest score on the indicator, only around half of the top score.
