DNB: trends in retail trade show increasing consumption in Lithuania

BC, Vilnius, 30.09.2013.Print version
In 2013, turnover growth rate of enterprises trading in non-food products exceeds the average rate of overall retail turnover and this shows that residents spend more not only on food and basic needs but also on entertainment goods, refurbishment of housing or even luxury goods, says Senior Analyst Indre Genyte-Pikciene at DNB bank.

According to Genyte-Pikciene, this is the first real sign of the revival of residents' purchasing power and domestic consumption, it also indicates major changes in the behaviour of household consumption and their assessment of financial future.

The fact that people assess their perspectives more optimistically is proved by increased consumer confidence index that reached –9 in September. At present consumer expectations have reached the pre-crisis level of 2008.

According to Lithuania Statistics, in August 2013 compared to August 2012, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased by 5.5 at constant prices. In August 2013 against July 2013, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased by 0.7%.

In January-August 2013 compared to the corresponding period in 2012, turnover of enterprises trading in food products increased by 4%, while the turnover of enterprises trading in non-food products increased by 6%.
