Life expectancy in Estonia grew faster than in other EU countries

The Statistics Board presented its publication “Estonian Statistics Yearbook 2013” on Friday, writes LETA/National Broadcasting.

Among other facts in the yearbook, it is revealed that the life expectancy at the moment of birth in Estonia has grown more than in other EU countries.

Chief Analyst of the Statistics Board Siim Krusell gave an overview of the changes in the Estonian socio-economic situation in 2012.

“From among positive developments, we can state that the unemployment rate in 2012 decreased and real pay continued moderate growth,” he said, adding that while economic growth pace slowed down, economic indicators continued improving.

Krusell remarked that concern about demographic processes grew significantly, as deaths outweighed births in Estonia once again, and emigration exceeded immigration numbers, too.

“Despite favourable developments on the labour market and pay market, the income gaps with principal emigration target countries are still two-fold or three-fold, and this might significantly affect migration patterns during the coming years as well,” he explained.
