Despite the government's efforts to reduce emigration, there is currently no information indicating that emigration is slowing down; approximately 37,000 persons left Latvia in 2011, exceeding the Central Statistical Bureau's estimates by 14,000, according to the latest study by University of Latvia Professor Mihails Hazans, informs LETA.

Hazans points out in an interview with the newspaper Neatkariga that the government's demographic measures have a potential, especially regarding those who are on the verge of leaving and never returning.

If monthly incomes of these people increase LVL 50-80, they could choose to stay for a while. The government's measures are correct. At the moment, however, they cannot reduce emigration considerably, believes Hazans.

Hazans estimates that 30,000 to 37,000 persons left Latvia in 2011, as opposed to 23,000 estimated by the Central Statistical Bureau. There are no certain data on 2012, the figure could reduce, admits the professor.

Hazans disagrees with Economy Minister Daniels Pavluts, who has mentioned a twofold decrease in emigration in 2012, since there are currently no data to support such claims.
