CPB's "Top 10" bribery cases include Jurmalagate and Latvenergo scandals

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 22.10.2012.Print version
The Corruption Prevention Bureau (CPB), marking its 10th anniversary, has released a list of the 10 most glaring bribery cases it has investigated.

Each of the 10 has been categorized, and here are four:

The largest case, in terms of money, undoubtedly is the Latvenergo affair, whose total is at least EUR 8 million.

The "most cynical case of judges and prosecutors being bought", is the saga of four judges and three prosecutors demanding money for "favorable" rulings.

The "harshest penalty" handed down was the eight years in prison for school principal Juris Stabins, who in 15 separate episodes demanded payment from parents for their child's enrollment. Stabins disappeared back in September of 2009, and is considered missing without a trace.

CPB names the LVL 20,000 Jurmalagate vote-buying scandal in city council elections as its "first political corruption case uncovered".
