Baltic States residents spend 26-50% of their income on food

The majority of the Baltic States residents shop for food almost on a daily basis, showed a poll carried out by Latvian business news portal Nozare.lv and the company Gfk Custom Research Baltic.
A common tendency prevailing in the three Baltic States is that the lower the income the higher the share of income spent for basic needs, writes LETA.
A total of 8% of Lithuanians, 18% of Latvians and 13% of Estonians said that the food product they could afford were of high quality. Meanwhile, 8% of Lithuanians, 5% of Latvians and 2% of Estonians doubted the quality of food they consume.
The poll also revealed that the Baltic States residents (from 73 to 90%) prefer locally produced staple food such as milk, bread, meat and eggs rather than imported food.
In Lithuania, 43% of residents do not buy any genetically modified products. The rate in Latvia is the highest with 58%, while in Estonia the share of people who do not eat genetically modified foods makes 41%.
When choosing between local and imported food products, Baltic
residents prefer locally produced basic food products such as bread,
milk, meat and eggs, according to a survey.
90% of Estonian, 89% of Latvian and 88% of Lithuanian residents prefer locally-produced bread. Local milk and milk products are preferred by 88% of Estonian, 85% of Lithuanian and 77% of Latvian residents. Meanwhile, 78% of Latvian, 82% of Estonian and 74% of Lithuanian residents opt for local meat. 80% of Estonian, 77% of Lithuanian and 73 percent of Latvian residents prefer local eggs.
Among imported food products, Baltic residents prefer tea, coffee, spices, alcoholic beverages, oils and fats.
The study shows that Latvian residents much more oppose genetically modified food products. 58% of Latvian residents point out that they would definitely not eat genetically modified foods. In Lithuania, the figure stands at 43% , in Estonia – 41%. Meanwhile, 8% of Lithuanian, 4% of Latvian and 3% of Estonian residents do not have any objections to genetically modified food.
The survey was carried out from June 14 to June 20. 1,016 Latvian, 784 Estonian and 1,021 Lithuanian residents were interviewed.
