Kalvane hopes to reduce unemployment to under 10% by end-2012

Newly-appointed State Employment Agency Director Inese Kalvane hopes that the current unemployment level in Latvia – 12.4% – will reduce to a single-digit number by the end of the year.

In an interview with the LNT morning show "900 sekundes" today, Kalvane expressed "cautious optimism" that it will be possible to achieve this, writes LETA.

According to Kalvane, 123,000 people currently have the status of unemployed. To reduce the unemployment rate below 10%, their numbers should fall by more than 23,000, which is a considerable figure.

Kalvane confirmed that the State Employment Agency will take active measures against those who receive unemployment benefits but do not want to work or look for jobs. If an unemployed person declines a job offer without any objective reasons, he or she could lose the status of unemployed, which can be restored no sooner than in three months.

Experts believe that the unregistered unemployment rate in Latvia is currently at 3-4% of the economically-active population.
