As many as 48% of companies in Latvia use unlicensed computer software, according to the 2018 Global Software Survey, conducted by the Business Software Alliance (BSA), reports LETA.

Unlicensed computer software is used by 41% of companies in Estonia and 50% in Lithuania. Compared to 2015, the use of unlicensed computer software in the three Baltic states has decreased by one percentage point.

The BSA survey reveals that the use of pirated computer software across the world has dropped by two%age points from 2015 to 37%. In Europe, the use of pirated software has decreased by one%age point to 28%.

IT experts indicate that, based on the BSA survey, the use of unlicensed software becomes increasingly risky and costly. Malware spread by unlicensed software costs nearly USD 359 billion (EUR 309.136 billion) to the world's companies a year. Also, the necessity to secure computes against data thefts and other security risks cause more and more entrepreneurs to buy licensed software.

When companies take pragmatic steps to enhance their software management, they can increase profits by as much as 11%. Studies show that organizations can achieve as much as 30% savings in annual software costs by implementing a robust SAM and software license optimization program, BSA said.
