A considerable increase of Chinese cargo transit through Latvia could be expected if the Chinese came to Latvia as investors, but they are carefully assessing the investment climate, Latvia’s relations with its neighbors, including Russia, said economic and financial expert Vadims Jerosenko in an interview with LETA.

As the expert said, China is an experienced investor and is assessing "how stable we are as a partner, how protected the investments are, how stable and efficient our tax policy is, how we are able to cooperate with the neighboring countries". The Baltic ports are competing for investors, and the Chinese investor will choose the port with the most efficient and understandable terms.

The Chinese are also assessing Latvia’s relations with Russia. China does not want to spoil its relations with Russia, but, at the same time, they are pragmatic. "If our offer will be more interesting and attractive than that of the Russian ports, I think they would be glad to cooperate with us," the expert said.

Jerosenko also said that the Chinese approach to business should be understood. They are not in a hurry, China is a country thinking in a long term. The only country planning its budget 200 years ahead. "The Chinese are not participating in Latvia as investors as partners, but China is a player in Latvia’s transit sector. We are cooperating with China, transit cargos are coming," he said.
