1,255,640 first time asylum seekers applied for international protection in EU in 2015

Estonia had last year the second smallest number of first-time asylum seekers among European Union member states, it appears from figures released by Eurostat. According to the data of the statistical office, a total of 1,255,640 first time asylum seekers applied for international protection in EU member states in 2015, reports LETA/BNS.

Compared to 562,680 applications received a year earlier, the figure represents an increase of 123%.

 

The highest numbers of applicants were registered in Germany, Hungary and Sweden, respectively 441,800, 174,435 and 156,110.

 

Finland received 32,150, Latvia 330 and Lithuania 275 applications.

 

Estonia received 225 asylum applications in 2015 and 145 in 2014. Year over year, the number of applications increased by 54%.

 

Spokespeople for the Interior Ministry corrected Eurostat's figures, saying the actual number of applications lodged with Estonian authorities was 226 last year and 147 a year earlier.

 

Only Croatia received fewer applications than Estonia in 2015, registering 140 asylum seekers.
