Narva mayor doubts job creation support will solve unemployment problem

The labor minister's proposal to introduce a job creation support for entrepreneurs in Estonia's East-Viru County is essence a good plan but unfortunately it will not solve the problem of unemployment in the northeastern region, Mayor of Narva Tarmo Tammiste says, informs LETA/BNS.

"The idea is not bad but neither is it new, as more or less similar opportunities have been offered before and entrepreneurs have always seized such opportunities," Tammiste told BNS adding that the idea will not solve the problem of joblessness but neither will it create more problems.

Minister of Health and Labor Jevgeni Ossinovski announced on Monday he will on Thursday place before the government the proposal to seek support from the European Globalization Adjustment Fund (EGF) to solve employment problems of East-Viru County and introduce in the region a job creation support funded by the Unemployment Insurance Fund.

According to the proposal, a company that hires at least 20 jobless residents of East-Viru County would get special support from the state. Firstly, the Unemployment Insurance Fund would train for it employees with necessary qualifications in line with the company's requirements.

Secondly, 50% of an employee's gross wages would be reimbursed to the company during one year. The measure would reduce the company's labor costs by about one third.

The job creation support would be paid for a period of up to 12 months and the created job must exist one year after the payments end, that is, for a minimum of two years. Eligible for support would be both beginning companies and those that relocate activity or expand to East-Viru County.
