Till last Friday, organisations across the world who wanted to buy domain suffixes ending with their brand name could submit the corresponding applications.

Estonian Internet Foundation head Marek-Andres Kauts said that the foundation does not plan bringing any other domains than .ee to the market. "As far as we know no other Estonian company or institution does that either," he said.

"We considered launching .tallinn, .tln or .eesti to the market, but when consulting with companies decided that .ee satisfies the needs of users," he said, adding that instead of spending money on launching new domains, the money should be channelled into raising the safety level and developing signing DNSSec domains.

"The same route has been chosen by the majority of EU institutions working on domains, including Finland, Sweden and Norway," he said.
