During the negotiations with the Russian Federation regarding the radio frequencies, Lithuania agreed with Russia on the opening of 790 – 862 MHz diapason. This frequency diapason is among the most valuable available frequencies, as it carries at long distances, the Lithuanian Transport Ministry reports.

The disengaged open diapason of frequencies is intended to facilitate the development of electronic services for the sake of growth of information society, writes LETA/ELTA.

During the negotiations, Russia accepted the permission for Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to use the frequency diapason applied on the Russian borderland. The parties mutually agreed that after the opening, the diapason which until now has been used by Russia for the accumulation and transmission of aeronautical information, will be adjusted to terrestrial systems providing services of electronic communication.

"This agreement is important for all the countries, as we all have the common aim – to provide the possibilities for as many citizens as possible to use rapid internet services and modern information technologies", said Vidas Ramanavicius, Information Society Policy Department of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Deputy Director.

It is expected that the use of disengaged frequencies will contribute to the reduction of digital divide: wireless broadband communication will start operating on rural territories. It will provide more possibilities for people to satisfy in a simpler manner their social, economic and cultural demands, which depend on the use of new technologies.
