An unidentified hacker attacked Elion’s e-mail system, attempting to get access to the accounts of the company’s 70,000 e-mail clients, writes LETA/Postimees Online.

Elion’s director of technology Kalev Reiljan stated that the object of the attack was the company’s e-mail system that includes email accounts of 70,000 customers – approximately 7 per cent of Elion’s e-mail accounts.

“Our internal investigation found that the hacker was unable to get access to the content of the e-mails and to customers’ passwords, although it was attempted,” said Reiljan. According to him, the part of the system that was under attack contained some of the customer accounts’ passwords.

Reiljan stated that Elion developed a suspicion of an attack on June 29. The definitive extent of the attack was determined on Thursday.

Elion’s director of technology noted that the attack did not concern the company’s largest e-mail system hot.ee. The part of the system that was under attack contained e-mail domains @neti.ee, @estpak.ee, @domeeninimi.ee and @online.ee. The attack was possible due to a software error in one of the component of the system that has by now been liquidated. Elion assured that the enterprise will carry out an additional security audit in order to analyse any potential security risks.
