Starting Monday, the Estonian national Internet domain .ee includes letters ä, ö, ü, õ, ð and þ, thus covering the whole Estonian alphabet; the shortest newly registered domain is öö.ee (öö=night), said the Estonian Internet Foundation.

The launch of registration of domains with umlaut letters was marked by registering symbolically the domain tiigrihüpe.ee by the Tiigirihüppe Sihtasutus (Tiger Leap Foundation) which so far has spelled its web page as tiigrihype.ee.

In the first 15 minutes when the new domains could be registered, 411 domain names with umlaut letters were registered; by Monday evening 467 were registered, writes LETA.

The first ten such new domain names that were registered were: äri.ee (äri=business), sülearvuti.ee (sülearvuti=laptop), käsipall.ee (käsipall=handball), töö.ee (töö=work), lemminkäinen.ee, tööaeg.ee (tööaeg=work time), büroomööbel.ee (büroomööbel=office furniture), üritusturundus.ee (üritusturundus=event marketing), kännukas.ee and jürgens.ee.

The shortest domain name with umlaut letters registered so far is öö.ee, the longest eesti-inglise-eesti-sõnastik.ee (Estonian-English-Estonian-dictionary). The biggest number of umlaut letters is in domain name õäöü.ee.

The Estonian Internet Foundation domain registry had 60,510 domain names registered altogether by Tuesday afternoon.
