“This is an important development for Estonian internet users since due to the lack of umlaut letter support many Estonian addresses have had to be registered in European Union’s top domain EU, which supports the Estonian language fully since 2009,” said Estonia’s largest domain registry keeper Zone.ee CEO Riho Kurg.
Kurg noted that Zone.ee forecasts that on Monday already 500-600 new addresses will be registered.
“Over 200 million domains have been registered in the world but a recent UNESCO report announced that just 2.8 million of them include letters outside the English alphabet. Now Estonia gives its contribution to the development of multicultural and language variety-rich Internet,” he said.
