Investments into modern technologies will lay foundation for growth of the Lithuanian economy, says Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius. According to him, this is proved by the completed transaction, under which the U.S. company Thermo Fisher Scientific acquired Lithuanian biotechnology company Fermentas International.

The prime minister said this at the meeting with Head of the Thermo Fisher Scientific biosciences department Norman David Eansor, reports LETA/ELTA.

The value of the transaction stands at 260 million U.S. dollars (about 728 million litas). "It is very important that the foundation for this transaction was laid by Lithuanian scientists, whose many years of work and creativity has created tremendous value that was confirmed by one of the world's leaders in biotechnology," said Kubilius.

Andrius Kubilius also noted that this was only the beginning. Now, an agreement with the international company IBM on establishment of a global research centre in Lithuania is being prepared that will allow further exploiting of Lithuanian scientific potential, providing Lithuanian scientists a possibility to enter the waters of international science.

According to the prime minister, the establishment of the so-called science valleys and targeted searches for the investors in the West are creating foundation for joining Lithuanian academic achievements with a lot of money.

"Only in such a way science and modern technologies can become a modern business in the globalized world and realize Lithuania's goal of becoming Nordic-Baltic region's service centre," said the head of the Government.
