So far, the .ee domain could be used by state institutions as well as Estonian companies.

“The internet and .ee domain have an important role in the working of the state’s economy. We have to behave here in line with customs of developed world, be available and open,” commented Estonian Internet Foundation board chairman Marek-Andres Kauts.

Registering domain names takes place now at two levels, servicing of the users has been delegated to registry keepers. The list of accredited registry keepers will be posted at www.eestiinternet.ee.

The transfer to the new domain rules affects all of those who registered .ee domains according to old rules too. They will be subject to 6-month transition period during which they have to pick a domain registry keeper and renew their registration.

Estonia’s largest domain registry keeper Zone Media will ask 369 kroons a year for a .ee domain.
