The opening of a development center of the Indian IT group HCL Technologies in Tallinn marks the beginning of more extensive economic cooperation between the two countries as several Indian software companies plan to expand to this Baltic state in the next few years, India's Ambassador to Estonia and Finland Ashok Kumar Sharma said, cites LETA.

"The arrival of HCL paves the way for other Indian businesses' entry into Estonia. It's a robust beginning. I've spoken with many Indian companies and they wish to come here and expand their office network," the ambassador told BNS.

According to Sharma it's above all software companies who are interested in Estonia, although there are also other businesses such as a forestry firm. "Indian IT companies want to come here mostly because they view Estonia as a window to Europe," he said.

"Estonia provides excellent proximity to one's end customers in Scandinavia or eastern Europe. It's very important in the IT business. At the same time expanding here and opening an office here is cheaper than in Scandinavia," he observed.

The ambassador said it also pays to keep in mind that Estonia is even in India known as an innovative e-state that offers software companies and start-ups a good environment for developing and doing business.

Sharma added that he is seriously working on bringing Indian companies to Estonia and the coming years are expected to see developments in bilateral economic cooperation.

The Tallinn center of HCL Technologies opened on Thursday plans to have a workforce of 100 by the end of next year.
