The explosion and fire aboard the Lithuanian ferry "Lisco Gloria" early Saturday caused about LVL 100,000 in losses for Riga's five-star "Gallery Park Hotel" as a shipment of antiques was destroyed.

Ieva Lipnika, the hotel's marketing department director, pointed out that the antiques were from the 18th and 19th centuries, and that possibly some lesser-scathed objects made from marble could be restored, writes LETA.

The dishes, sculptures and other valuables, bought at Bruun Rasmussen Auction House, were insured.

The ferry was sailing from Kiel in Germany to the Lithuania port of Klaipeda overnight from Friday to Saturday when it was rocked by an explosion on its upper deck.

As fire began to spread, several other ships hurried to the scene, and a total of 249 people were evacuated from the burning vessel and taken back to Kiel. Twenty-eight needed medical treatment, mostly for smoke inhalation, including two Latvian citizens.
