28 illegal immigrants caught at Estonian border

BC, Tallinn, 05.02.2013.Print version
The Estonian police and border guard board announced on Sunday of catching 28 illegal immigrants in the South Eastern Võrumaa county; that is a half of the total amount of illegal immigrants the Estonian border guard caught illegally crossing the South Estonian border during the whole of 2012, LETA/Delfi reports.

The documents of seven of the illegal immigrants showed they were of Vietnamese citizenship; the citizenship of the rest has to be yet ascertained. There were 27 men and 1 woman among them. They were caught in several villages in the Võrumaa county.

The operation to catch the illegal immigrants started Sunday morning when border guard officials discovered footprints in Võrumaa that referred to illegal border crossing of the Estonia-Russian control line. During the day, several groups of illegal immigrants were discovered, the biggest of them had 12 members. Local people contributed to catching 6 of the immigrants.

South Estonian prefecture's prefect Tarmo Kohv said that since the pressure towards the foreign border administered by the Estonian state has increased, they cooperate more and more closely with the Russian border guard and local communities of people.

Last year, 56 persons were detained at the Estonian Southern border, who crossed the state birder illegally.
