According to the press release of the Office of the Prime Minister, EU institutions have agreed unequivocally on cost effectiveness of such a model for reforming vertical monopolies. It is also said that the model serves national energy security interests best and brings most benefits to users, reports LETA/ELTA.
The concept lays down that the division of natural-gas transmission activities will create most favourable conditions to expand gas networks and develop other non-commercial gas infrastructure projects.
"Today the Government has made a political decision split vertical monopolies, as required by the EU's third package for a competitive EU gas and electricity market. The reform aims at giving an opportunity to users to choose, fair pricing and reliable supply.
These are essential changes that will benefit the consumer, because we will have a competitive gas sector which will be capable of providing the lowest gas prices," Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas said.
