Lithuania to increase support for the civil society in Belarus
Evaldas Ignatavicius. |
The Deputy Minister thanked European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule and donor countries for the decision to increase support to the Vilnius-based European Humanities University (EHU). The Belarusian University in exile, which was closed down in Belarus in 2004 and since 2005 has been based in Lithuania, is still not welcome in Belarus. This university provides its students with an access to higher education without any ideological constraints, the students of the EHU not only acquire academic skills, but are also educated as well-rounded, civic-minded and independent personalities – the leaders of a future democratic Belarus. Deputy Minister Ignatavicius called on the European Union countries to take full advantage of the opportunities to facilitate the travel of Belarusian citizens in the EU's territory.
The donors' conference "Solidarity with Belarus" is attended by representatives from donor countries and organizations that support the Belarusian civil society.
Deputy Minister Ignatavicius informed the participants of the conference about the International Implementers Meeting, which is held on 3-4 February at the Eastern Europe Studies Centre in Vilnius and is attended by experts that are engaged in projects supporting the civil society in Belarus, public figures and representatives from the Belarusian civil society.
