Latvian theater legend Vera Singajevska dead at 90

BC, Riga, 28.04.2014.Print version

Popular Latvian actress Vera Singajevska – the utterly charming and unforgettable Karlsson of stage and radio, has died, two days before her 91st birthday April 28, informs LETA.

Nicknamed "Singa", her career began as a member of the National and Jelgava theater companies, before her longtime affiliation with the former Latvian Youth Theater. There, she played countless leading roles in productions for children and adults, with her claim to fame being the loveable Karlsson – a portrayal that author Astrid Lindgren herself had admired.

Singajevska married one of her stage partners from the Youth Theater – Talivaldis Abolins, and they produced a son – Gundars Abolins, a shining star of the theater in his own right.

In 1995, the Latvian nation saw it fit to bestow upon her the Order of the Three Stars.
