In the framework of the EstWin project, the Estonian Broadband Development Foundation will build more than 6,000 kilometres of optical lines networks by the year 2015. The estimated cost of the works is 1.5 billion kroons.
“EstWin is a very important infrastructure project for the entire Estonia,” said minister of economic affairs and communications Juhan Parts. He added that works on 14 different sites began officially on Monday and public procurement process is in progress to find designers and construction companies for the next 18 sub-projects.
In establishing the pan-Estonian network of optical cables, the modern micro-pipes technology will be used that will make it possible, if necessary, to multiply the capacity of the network without considerable extra costs.
CEO of the Estonian Broadband Development Foundation Olav Harjo stated that fast-speed internet has become a regular service in the cities while in rural areas it is not accessible for most people. “With the EstWin project we will remove this digital gap between the countryside and the urban areas,” he added.
EstWin is a part of the Estonian Development Plan for Next-Generation Broadband Network which has set a goal of providing by the year 2015 100% of homes, enterprises and institutions with the opportunity to accede to super-fast internet connection and to achieve data communications speed of up to 100 Mbit/s.
The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the Estonian State.
