BC, Riga , 30.03.2020.Print version
Traffic intensity on Latvia's main highways has fallen by 19 percent since the state of emergency has been declared over the Covid-19 crisis, LETA was told at the press office of Latvijas Valsts Celi (LVC) state-road manager.

Compared to the respective period a year ago, from February 15 to 28, traffic intensity on Latvia's main highways has dropped by 18%.

The biggest traffic intensity reduction - 87% - has been recorded in the Eleja-Lithuanian border section of the Jelgava highway. Border control has been resumed on the Latvian-Lithuanian border due to the Covid-19 crisis. On the Valmiera highway, traffic intensity between Strenci and Valka has dropped 43 percent. Border control has resumed also on the Latvian-Estonian border.

The Tallinn highway near Adazi is the only road section where traffic intensity has increased somewhat in comparison with the same period in 2019.

LVC representatives indicated that so far traffic intensity on Latvia's main roads has been correlating with economic activity trends.

In 2019, average traffic intensity on Latvia's main roads increased by 5 percent against 2018 to 6,525 transport vehicles per kilometer a day. Traffic intensity had been growing in Latvia since 2011 and reached the highest point in a decade last year.
