Transport minister and entrepreneurs doing business in Freeport of Ventspils agree on cooperation
The transport ministers met with the entrepreneurs from the Freeport of Ventspils' industrial zone on Wednesday, with 14 entrepreneurs and managers of the freeport's companies participating in the meeting.
Ievina indicated that the port's operations are directly connected not only with the port's terminals and other shipping and cargo handling enterprises, but also several dozen producing companies operating in the port's territory and renting production facilities or land.
In the meeting, Linkaits indicated that the state is interested in a business-friendly environment in Ventspils, so that entrepreneurs had favorable conditions, talks with the port authority were comprehensible and transparent and the Freeport of Ventspils prospered and developed.
Freeport of Ventspils CEO Andris Purmalis said that industrial zones are developed at many ports in the world because companies that ship materials and products to foreign countries are interested in basing their businesses closer to ports. Dialogue with the producers is therefore highly important at the moment, Purmalis said.
As reported, the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) on December 9 imposed sanctions on a number of natural and legal persons in Europe, Asia and Latin America, including on Lembergs, based on the so-called Magnitsky Act.
To deal with Lembergs' influence in the Freeport of Ventspils, the government decided to take over the ports of Ventspils and Riga. On December 18, Saeima passed in the final reading a bill to turn over the functions of the Freeport of Ventspils to the newly established state-owned joint stock company Ventas Osta (Venta Port).
On the same day, the Freeport of Ventspils Authority was removed from the list of entities sanctioned by the OFAC.
