Economics minister suggests international tender to find new head for Riga port

An international tender should be held to find a new CEO for the Freeport of Riga, Latvian Economics Minister Arvils Aseradens (Unity) said on the morning news program of the LNT commercial television on Monday, writes LETA.

He said the suggestion would be put before the Cooperation Council of the ruling coalition parties.

The economics minister said that Transport Minister Uldis Augulis (Greens/Farmers) held the "the golden share" because he would have to approve the choice of the eight members of the port's board - four representing the Riga City Council and four representing the Latvian state.

"This is an excellent chance to choose the best candidate, and I think that announcing and international tender will be the best option," Aseradens said.

The new CEO will have to deal with a number of challenges, trying to maintain the competitiveness of the Riga port amid a decline in freight amounts, the economics minister said.

As reported, long-time CEO of the Freeport of Riga, Leonids Loginovs, last week tendered his letter of resignation effective as of March 10. The Freeport of Riga Authority has been instructed to come up with the proposals on how the port's next CEO will be selected and to submit those proposals to the board by February 22.

Loginovs has been the CEO of the Freeport of Riga since 1998. There have been several attempts to dismiss him from his post over the years after various scandals, all of them unsuccessful.

The Riga port is the largest in Latvia in terms of cargo turnover.
