Renewing Fire and Rescue Service's fleet will require EUR 86 mln by 2028

Part of the State Fire and Rescue Service's fleet of vehicles is run down and renewing the fleet will require EUR 86 mln by 2028, as the Fire and Rescue Service informed Saeima Defense, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee, reported LETA.

The Fire and Rescue Service notes that the total number of vehicles is still not up to standard. Last year, there were 246 vehicles that had been in service for more than ten years, and only 111 vehicles for less than ten years.

Although 84 special vehicles were purchased for approximately EUR 37 mln between 2014 and 2018, the total number of the Fire and Rescue Service's vehicles has not increased. This means that the average age of the vehicles in the service's fleet keeps increasing.

The situation with fire engines is the worst. In total, the Fire and Rescue Service would need to buy 421 new vehicles by 2028 in order to gradually meet government regulations.

According to the Fire and Rescue Service's estimates, the purchases of these vehicles will cost EUR 85,935,276 from 2021 to 2028.

The Fire and Rescue Service also points out that the Interior Ministry previously stated that many fire stations were in bad condition and did not meet the requirements. Of the 91 fire stations, 82 are in poor technical condition and do not meet employee safety and health requirements.
