Trucks, tractors to arrive in Riga on Thursday to protest against planned territorial reform
The protest campaign will be organized on Thursday, March 5.
LZP said that despite objections raised by local governments, residents and experts against the rushed and undemocratic progress of the reform, the bill will be put before parliament for the second reading on Thursday,
The party also believes that the special committee set up at the parliament for consultations on the administrative territorial reform turnout out to be "fabrication of democracy".
"Such a situation has caused dissatisfaction of local residents, including farmers and business representatives, who turned to their local councils, urging to take more radical measures against arbitrariness of the government coalition," said LZP.
So far representatives from Kandava, Ikskile, Carnikava, Aloja, Jelgava, Salacgriva, Alsunga, Ventspils, Tukums, Sala, Engure and Incukalns counties have voiced readiness to participate in the protest campaign.
As reported, the reform plan proposed by the Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ministry provided for reducing the number of municipalities in Latvia from 119 to 39.
