BC, Riga, 28.02.2020.Print version
On Thursday in Washington, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signed a joint declaration on cooperation in 5G security, LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry.

The deal was signed considering that 5G could be vital for both prosperity and national security in the future, and could also facilitate cross-border services and trade.

When signing the declaration, Rinkevics emphasized that the 5G network will provide a wide range of new applications, including the provision of critical infrastructure and services to the public, to the benefit of Latvian and US citizens and the economy. "Increased data through the 5G network will further connect the world, including the US and Latvian economies, as well as boost cross-border services and trade," the minister said.

During the meeting, the officials also discussed current issues of the Latvian-US strategic partnership, transatlantic cooperation and security policy. Rinkevics reaffirmed Latvia's support for the establishment of the International Alliance for Religious Freedom, which was founded on February 5 in Washington and was attended by Latvia.

Rinkevics expressed his gratitude for the US contribution to the security of the Baltic States and the region and described the bilateral relations as excellent. "The United States is Latvia's closest strategic ally, and this is reflected in the broad agenda and in areas such as defense cooperation, energy security, hybrid threat prevention, especially cyber security and disinformation," the minister said.

He also stressed that he highly appreciated the US support for Latvia's security - both military presence and financial support. "We agree that fears about the downfall of NATO have been exaggerated as the Alliance grows stronger with US leadership," Rinkevics added.

The minister also expressed Latvia's position in favor of closer energy dialogue between the European Union (EU) and the United States, which would contribute to the security and diversification of energy supplies.

Rinkevics also invited the U.S. secretary of state to visit Latvia.
